Stevie Wonder is a master at using just the right words in his lyrics to convey emotions without overdoing it. This is a good example. It is taken from his 1976 album, Songs in the Key of Life.

My Girl by The Temptations

Miracle by The Foo Fighters

When we are discussing those gentle moments with newborns, the Foo Fighters are a band you might not expect to see listed. Nevertheless, it is a very personal and, some would say, emotional song. It was taken from their 2006 album, In Your Honor.

It was written by Dave Grohl to his then four-year-old daughter, Violet. He talks about how life is a miracle and the love that a parent feels for their child.

This is a re-recorded version of a song she had previously sung with Andrea Bocelli from the 1999 film “The Quest for Camelot.”

(You’re) Having My Baby by Paul Anka (feat. Odia Coates)

Paul Anka was a Canadian singer that became one of those “teen heartthrobs” of the late 50s and early 60s. But, unlike most of his contemporaries, there was a lot more to him than tight trousers and six gallons of Brylcreem on his hair.

He studied music theory and wrote great songs. “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” for Buddy Holly was one. That was the last song Holly recorded in 1959 before the plane crash. Paul Anka signed over all his songwriter royalties for the song to Holly’s widow, Maria, to help her. One of the nice guys.

A different time…

“You’re Having My Baby” seems like a title that is rather blunt and lacking in emotion. But, at the time, it was used with a loving connotation. Contrary to what some say, this song wasn’t his first hit; that was a song called “Diana.” This came shortly after.

He started his singing career very young and moved between music and acting to become a successful music entrepreneur. He wrote, “You’re Having My Baby” and recorded a duet with Odia Coates. The song portrays a man singing to his wife or lover about her pregnancy and carries a lot of emotion.

Child of Mine by Carole King

So, we reach the end of this quite short list of the best songs about having a baby, but there is a reason for that. 

Carole King was one of the great songwriters of the 70s. Her album, Tapestry, would be in my top 10 all-time albums. This was taken from her 1970 album, Writer, the first to be released under her name.

Contrary to some opinions… 

It wasn’t her first recording. She was a member of a band called The City, which released an album entitled Now That Everything’s Been Said.

“Child of Mine” is a great example of the quality of the songs that she was producing even this early in her career. A beautiful song that talks to the child about the future. And, as she says, it might not be the best of times. But you can make it so.

Over the years, it has remained a favorite of hers and has been covered by Linda Ronstadt and Kenny Rogers.

As I said, the list is quite short, but there is a reason for that. When I listened to some tracks relating to the subject, I realized that they were very “trite” in their expressions and the language used. A little bit cheesy, you might say.
